The NSW Department of Education hosted its annual NSW Government Schools International Student Awards Ceremony on Friday 15 March 2024 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. The awards recognise the remarkable achievements and contributions of international students studying in NSW government schools and outstanding work by schools and staff in supporting them.
A highlight of the event was a special video message from the Honourable Prue Car, Deputy Premier of NSW and Minister for Education and Early Learning. The Deputy Premier applauded the finalists for their hard work and resilience and wished them well with their future studies.
The student awards were presented by the the Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, Mr Murat Dizdar, who also gave the opening address, in which he underscored the important role of international education in developing intercultural competence across the student body.
Ka Ty excelled in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics Extension 2 at Bonnyrigg High School. Her exceptional results in the 2023 Higher School Certificate saw her placed her on the 2023 Distinguished Achievers list and the All-round Achievers list.
Ka Ty Nguyen received the Academic Achievement Award from Mr Murat Dizdar, Secretary, NSW Department of Education.
Yuet Ting (YT) Wong demonstrated exceptional leadership as School Captain at Cumberland High School, where he was also a Peer Tutor and Peer Support Leader. His effective communication and advocacy positioned him as a role model, especially among international students.
YT Wong received the Leadership Award from Mr Murat Dizdar, Secretary, NSW Department of Education.
Wawa significantly contributed to Mosman High School's Leadership Committee for Visual Arts, leading initiatives like the Mosman Art Walk and school art exhibitions. Wawa actively participated in the FRESH volunteer group and the International Student Buddy program.
Wawa Yang received the School Service Award from Mr Murat Dizdar, Secretary, NSW Department of Education.
Usha adopts a holistic approach to student life and academic success for international students. She provides weekly individual tutoring to students with language barriers or academic challenges. Usha established a buddy program and cultural exchanges to integrate international and local students, enhancing the school's supportive and inclusive environment.

Lina is a School Administration Officer whose attentive approach to students’ emotional and mental health, including providing personalised guidance, has made her a trusted resource for international students. Her efforts in organising events, such as the International Lunch and excursions, promote unity and help international students form lasting bonds within the school.

Concord Public School received the International Student Program School Excellence Award for exceptional support of international students. Concord Public School has the largest cohort in any NSW government primary school. The school's collaborative approach involves all staff members, from administrators to teachers and senior executives. Their effective welfare practices ensure the wellbeing of their diverse student body, while Principal Ana Vountoulas has shared best practices with local principal networks. Concord Public's feedback to DE International has contributed to improving screening processes for new international student applicants.
