Jimin's story

I began studying in NSW in Year 3. My parents wanted me to be exposed to the vibrant diversity of Australian culture which fosters inclusivity and multiculturalism from a young age.

I went to Strathfield Girls High School after I graduated from Newington Public School. I was initially attracted to Strathfield Girls High School being the closest options from my house. Also, being in a single-sex environment fostered empowerment and confidence, encouraging girls to excel academically and pursue passions freely. The diverse student body, including many international students, enriched the learning experience, broadening global perspectives.

I struggled in primary school when I first came to NSW because I could not speak a word of English. However, as I transitioned into high school, I decided to participate in many extracurricular activities to improve my English skills and socialise with others.

This included being an SRC representative since Year 7, and other leadership activities, such as Peer Support and Maths Mentoring, which contributed to me becoming part of the prefect body in Year 12. I participated not only in the leadership programs offered at our school, but I also joined many of the creative activities, such as playing a violin in the school orchestra throughout my junior years.

During high school, my favourite subjects were Maths and Science. Initially, I struggled with Science in Year 7 and didn't think it was for me. However, after utilising the Homework Help provided by our school every afternoon till 6 pm and meeting a supportive science teacher, my perspective changed. This teacher later became my Physics teacher in Year 11 and 12 and ignited my interest in taking Science for my HSC. I pursued Chemistry and Physics, winning my school's first place award in both subjects on graduation, along with Mathematics Extension 1 and 2.

I was glad when I was selected as the finalist for the International Student Academic Achievement Award because it was a chance for me to share my experiences with other international students. My experience as an international student may be very different from others as I was here from a young age, but I could perhaps give the best advice! I would say, even if your English may not be perfect, make sure to expose yourself to many of the extracurricular activities your school offers. These experiences will both help you with your English skills and allow you to make more new friends.
